i) Social Status
The school is located in Kankar, Ward No. 8 of Punarwas Municipality, which is an exclusively indigenous Rana Tharu settlement. The residents speak the Rana Tharu language and possess their own unique culture and traditions. Most of the people here are illiterate, and female literacy rate is virtually negligible. Their diet and attire remain largely untouched by modernization, primarily due to a lack of education and limited contact with other communities, meaning they have been little influenced by the cultures and civilizations of other groups. However, awareness is gradually growing among the villagers that children must be sent to school and that education is an essential prerequisite for human life. Therefore, it is essential for various governmental and non-governmental organizations to run awareness programs focusing on basic needs such as environmental sanitation, safe drinking water, and education in this village.
ii) Geographical Conditions
The school is situated in the northeastern part of Kankar, Ward No. 8 of Punarwas Municipality in the southern region of Kanchanpur District, Sudurpashchim Province. The school's service area covers Kankar and the squatter (sukumbasi) settlement area towards Kankar in "Ka" village. Agricultural production is quite low in this region. Only a single monsoon crop of paddy is harvested in Kankar, with occasional lentil farming. Because the area remains waterlogged during the winter, the production of winter wheat crops is not feasible. Consequently, the geographical conditions are unfavorable from an agricultural standpoint, which has also impacted the school's development. Since farmers and laborers of this region harvest only one crop a year, they are financially unable to donate or contribute funds for school development. Therefore, active support and goodwill from the Government of Nepal, local bodies, and various organizations are urgently needed.
Other Infrastructure & Facilities:
The school is located in the most marginalized indigenous Tharu settlement of Punarwas Municipality. Health sub-posts are located 4 to 5 km away, while the ward office, secondary school, and market are about 2 km to 5 km away. Electricity and internet services have reached the village, and a small concrete bridge has been built over the local stream, with gravel roads connecting the area. However, the village gets waterlogged during the rainy season, and if the Sharda Barrage in India were to overflow or flood, the village's future looks quite bleak. Relocating the residents to higher ground in the north-east direction would ensure a secure future for their lives.
iii) Local Organizations and Role in School Development
The school's development has been heavily supported by various entities over the years:
-
2064 BS: Received financial assistance of NPR 80,000 from the local Parasan Village Development Committee (VDC) to construct a 4-room building. The NGO RRN also made a major contribution of NPR 3,35,132.10 toward the building construction, alongside timber provided by Jan Jagaran Community Forest.
-
2065/2066 BS: Received support from the Parasan VDC office to construct a 2-room toilet block.
-
2068 BS: Received grants from the District Education Office to construct a 2-room building, alongside a 2-room toilet and a drinking water tube-well provided by the NGO NEEDS.
-
2070 BS: Received further construction support for a 2-room concrete block building from the District Education Office.
-
2074 BS: The NGO SEBAC Nepal provided assistance for adding a 2-room toilet, concrete roofing across all four rooms, and plumbing/motor installation. Additionally, the Punarwas Municipality office provided NPR 2,50,000 for barbed-wire fencing around the school premises.
-
2075 BS: Received NPR 2,50,000 from Punarwas Municipality for a school gate and furniture.
-
2075/2076 BS: With the support of the NGO BuildOn Nepal (Dhangadhi, Kailali), a 3-room building, 2-room toilet, 20 sets of furniture, carpets, tables, chairs, and cushions were provided. The Punarwas Municipality office contributed NPR 4,000,000 toward this building project.
-
2078/2079 BS: Received NPR 1,000,000 from the Ministry of Social Development (Sudurpashchim Province, Social Development Office, Kanchanpur) for ICT and physical infrastructure improvement. This funded an ICT Computer Lab equipped with 5 computers, 1 laptop, 1 projector, 1 inverter, 2 batteries, computer desks, chairs, carpets, sound system, and room painting.
-
2080/2081 BS: Received an additional grant of NPR 2,000,000 from the Ministry of Social Development (Sudurpashchim Province) to successfully construct a new 2-room building.
iv) Community Support for the School
The community has played a vital, foundational role in the establishment, operation, and development of this school. In the initial phase of establishment, villagers sustained school expenses by collecting paddy from every household. When the school building was being constructed in 2064 BS, villagers voluntarily dug the foundation and transported bricks and sand for free. Similarly, in 2075/2076 BS, during the construction of the BuildOn-supported building and toilets, community members rotated in shifts of 5 people daily, contributing voluntary labor (shramdaan) for 1 to 2 months. Every year in the month of Shrawan, locals clear bushes and clean the school perimeter near the community forest through voluntary labor, continuing to assist in every school project whenever needed. Without this community support, neither the establishment nor the progressive development of this school would have been possible. The bond between the community and the school is deeply harmonious, and the future of the school relies heavily on continued community collaboration.
